Brazilian biomes in focus: an active methodology to engage students in conservation

Abstract

The conservation of Brazilian biomes is an extremely important issue due to their richness and diversity of living beings. However, the advancement of human activity has put pressure on these areas, casting doubt on preservation for the future. To address this topic at school, the National Common Curricular Base and the Ceará Reference Curricular Document highlight the importance of conserving biomes and biodiversity. It is essential to actively involve students, such as in an Investigative Didactic Sequence. The SDI used was adapted from the model developed by Bybee, model 5E. The activity was applied in a high school. The results showed that students were involved in the activity, expressed their opinions and created awareness-raising proposals, such as advertising campaigns. The application of SDI proved to be efficient in addressing the conservation of biomes in the classroom, stimulating reflection, critical thinking and student autonomy.
