The applications of genetics present benefits and risks to society, as it promotes the sharing, confrontation and negotiation of ideas. Thus it is important to understand the potential of textbooks of eight grade Natural Sciences in the development of critical citizens, by exploring the applications of genetics. A content analysis reveals the approach to this issue in four textbooks is mainly focused on the enumeration of for and against arguments regarding the production of transgenic products. It is significant to implement in textbooks discussion activities that promote argumentation and decision making skills.
