Sítio do pica-pau amarelo: a statistical activity in the 2nd cycle of portuguese basic education

This work presents how a 5th year student from a public school in Portugal (ages 10-11) solved statistical holiday homework with the aim of using a daily life context familiar to that student. It is a qualitative approach in order to analyze the activity carried out from the point of view of a pedagogical act and its semiotic approach aspects also. The contribution of this work lies in the fact that the use of an investigation basic education activity – carried out in a context that the student recognizes – can also enable learning of the statistical contents.
