Abstract

This literature review explores the role that artificial intelligence (AI) plays in the personalization and discovery of content within the Spotify platform, as well as the impact that its use has on musical culture in general. It analyses how the use of AI algorithms enables the delivery of personalized experiences, such as algorithmically generated playlists, through the analysis of user data. This review highlights the benefits in the discovery of new content and the challenges associated with personalization, such as ethical, cultural and economic issues, including content diversification, privacy concerns, and the impact on the economic sustainability of artists. It also explores how Spotify balances the use of this technological innovation with curation, or human input, in order to mitigate the implications associated with the use of AI.
