Abstract

So as to map the course of pre-modernist short narrative, we seek to examine decadent, symbolist and neo-romantic authors and works, which, though displaying undeniable diversity, are nevertheless emblematic of a similar quest for new (aphorism, prose poem) or renewed (short story, novella) literary formats and for innovative narrative techniques (interior monologue).
