Abstract

Though fi rmly rooted in the doctrines of historical and dialectic materialism and shaped within a framework of artistic and cultural engagement aimed at man’s consciousnessawakening and social transformation, Alves Redol’s dramaturgy isn’t confi ned – as has been so frequently stated – to a concern for content. It reveals not only the playwright’s genuine interest for theatre (comparable in that respect to that of other neo-realist Portuguese authors) as a sound knowledge of dramatic literature and of drama history and aesthetics, as is illustrated by his short plays, most of which remain unpublished.
