João Carlos Celestino Gomes (Ílhavo, 1899 – Lisboa, 1960) is the author of the theatre play by the senior students of the Faculty of Medicine in Coimbra, in 1926-1927, entitled Fitas Doiradas…Ilusões Doiradas…The play was twice performed by the students themselves, on May 29th and May 30 th 1927. In this play, structured into two acts, Celestino Gomes recalls the academic traditions, the institution and its representatives – mainly the professors of the Faculty of Medicine – using an incisive speech, with emphasis on humour and satire, which also accounts for the national political situation.
He also gives a colourful portrait of his fi fty one colleagues. Thus, the doctor-writer closes up a fundamental period of his literary activity, bearing in mind that the 20’s set up the beginning of a long-lasting and profi cuous creation.
