In O Retorno, Dulce Maria Cardoso provides a first -person account of the enforced return of thousands of Portuguese who had lived in African colonies ensuing the revolution which took place in April 25th. The novel focus on a male narrator in his teens who has been displaced form the only country he recognized as his own and has to learn how to grow in a hostile new land and adapt to the complexity of a new world in a process leading to a rebirth. We will emphasize the aspects which allow us to consider o Retorno as a bildungsroman dealing with identity and self -reconstruction.
