This text deals with the question of the spatial symbolism in A Feira dos Assombrados (1992) by José Eduardo Agualusa. The analyses focuses on the symbolic images of the topoi of town and river: dead (ghost) town, submerged town, the verticality of water as a symbol of the interior depth, identity/alterity.
