Portuguese varieties in literary text and its translation into French. What borders? What horizons?

Abstract

Literary re-creation of Portuguese language varieties shows the complexity of their uses and their variation, following the paths of esthetically modeled creation and veering poor imitation. Thus, our paper will be based on the analysis of different language registers, selected from a corpus of contemporary literary texts so as to emphasize the processes of recreating the linguistic complexity in Portuguese. Secondly, a comparison with the French translation will allow us to compare similitudes, proximities and differences between linguistic processes in Portuguese (source text) and French (translation). This reflection will focus on transitional areas, on frontiers that dilute
separating borders, cancelling them, and thus opening interpreting horizons of a linguistic and cultural context in a language “of the other” – Portuguese – due to its re-creation in French.
