Abstract

In this article, we develop a reading of the tale “O maldito, Marianina, e o feitiço da Rocha da Pena”, which Teresa Veiga published in the book Uma aventura secreta do Marquês de Brandomín, in 2008. Our proposal considers that the narrative establishes a discussion about the traditional fantastic nineteenth century literature, but aware of its contemporaneity, is not confused with this aesthetic, as it would be believed at first. In this way, it brings elements relevant to the manifestation of the genre of the last century and thus also problematizes contemporary social and political issues, making use of the fantastic as a mode of representation of today’s reality.
