Abstract

Directed by Roland Emmerich, 2012 (2009) constitutes a disaster movie, a subgenre of action films that had its prime time in the seventies. The screenplay, which follows Syd Field’s paradigm, is linear: the planet’s core has heated, earthquakes threaten mankind and the oceanic waters are rising. To survive the deluge and the mass extinction of humans, fauna and flora, scientists built gigantic arks. In this article, my objective is to examine how Noah’s myth is simultaneously appropriated and subverted in this cult movie. In my analysis, I resort to the theory of cinematic adaptation, intersemiotic translation and intertextuality.
