Crônicas de Machado de Assis e Lima Barreto: a cidade e as letras
Abstract
This article discusses the relationships between literature and urban experience and provides a survey of the representations of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It aims to analyse chronicles produced by Machado de Assis and Lima Barreto. The study of these chronicles takes into consideration their literary nature, as well as the historical
configuration and journalistic circulation of a genre that has until recently been disregarded by the literary canon. Amidst the intricate forest of symbols woven by modernity, Machado’s and Barreto’s cities emerge.
