Abstract

This paper discusses a project that aims to contribute to the management of dog waste in urban areas, focussing on the development of an electronic bag dispenser for dog waste. The project was the result of a partnership between Vila Nova de Gaia City Council and the Master's in Industrial and Product Design at the University of Porto. The methodology included field research, analysing the state of the art, strategy development, product devel- opment and prototyping. The project's innovation lies in the integration of RFID technology to promote the conscious use of bags and prevent them from being wasted. Using RFID technology, the proposed dispenser controls access to bags, for more efficient and appropri- ate use, and monitors existing stock. In addition, it contributes to the management of data on animals in the region. The proposal involves the local community, encouraging sustain- able practices and the registration of domestic animals. It is considered that the dispenser model developed could set an example for other urban areas in the efficient management of pet waste, promoting urban sustainability.
