Abstract

Politeness expressions are a very particular aspect of any language and encompass much more than just linguistic elements. They also involve pragmatic aspects, sociocultural aspects and even the learner's projection of their linguistic imagination. The present study aimed to understand how linguistic distance (understood here as familiarity or "strangeness") can influence language learning (in this case in particular, Portuguese as a non-native language), specifically regarding the ways of addressing people and politeness expressions.
With the conclusions drawn from this study, the intention is to promote a reflection on the strategies that teachers can adopt as mediators of linguistic and cultural differences or similarities, in the hope that this will lead to benefits in the learning of Portuguese as a Non- Native Language (PLNM) and all other aspects associated with it.
