The literary translation from Portuguese in Slovak Academia: contributions to innovation in teaching materials

The article begins by discussing the history and current state of translation studies in Slovakia, then
focuses on the teaching of literary translation in the Portuguese-Slovak language combination at
the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University. It analyzes the structure of study plans and how
individual subjects contribute to the development of translation competence. Subsequently, it
identifies the main problematic phenomena in the translation process from Portuguese into Slovak
and focuses in more detail on problems at the morphosyntactic level. Further, the article presents
inadequate solutions provided by students and explains how to find more appropriate and aesthetic
solutions in view of the grammatical and syntactic nature of Slovak. In conclusion, the authors
present the basic characteristics of new suggestions to reduce this problem.
