Abstract

Conventual pharmacy represents an area of considerable importance in Portuguese and European pharmacy, including both convent apothecaries and apothecarians. In this article, the authors provide a general characterization of the Portuguese 18th century pharmacy in an international context and underline the role of pharmaceutical literature and its contribution for the importance of conventual pharmacy and analyse, within this framework, the Pharmacopea Lusitana (1704) by the ecclesiastic author D. Caetano de Santo António, as well as the inventory of the apothecary of the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Aveiro).
