Based on the medieval Portuguese translation of Cicero’s treatise De officiis, entitled "Livro dos Oficios", we seek to further the knowledge of 14th century Portuguese language, specifically regarding the way in which the deontic modality is conveyed in both Latin and Portuguese. We will particularly look into the deontic modal value of the phrase ser + de + infinitive, used to translate, among others, adjective constructions that wouldn’t appear to have this modal value.
