Abstract

This article stems from a recent book published by the author. It transcribes and translates into Portuguese a poetical testimonium by Father Manuel Álvares, S. J., offered to his colleague Father Cipriano Soares, printed at the beginning of the first edition of the latter’s best‐seller handbook of elementary Rhetoric Ars rhetorica libri tres, Coimbra, 1562. In addition, and besides some notes intended to provide information on the historical and cultural background, two further Latin texts and vernacular translations are also provided: twelve elegiac doublets, by Father Miguel Venegas, which were published at the same place and stand as a pendant to Álvares’ poem; and the introduction written by Álvares to his selection and expunged edition of Martial’s epigrams, first published in 1569, and intended as a textbook to Latin classes at Jesuit schools all over the world.
