Abstract

The study analyses two early moments in Solon’s career: the supposed interpolation of verses in the Homeric text to take the link between Athens and Salamina back in time, and the simulation of insanity (mania), which allowed him to circumvent legal prohibitions and resume the debate over the possession of the island. Although his stance was considered ‘inconvenient’ for his status, Solon proved effective, revealing a political intelligence comparable to that of Ulysses. These episodes underline Homer’s value as an educator of Greece, influencing personalities who modelled Hellenic identity, such as Solon, the paradigmatic Athenian legislator.
