The influence of progymnasmata on the Greek novel: ethopoeia in Leucippe and Clitophon

This paper aims to analyse the presence of the ethopoeia (ἠθοποιία) in Achilles Tatius’ Leucippe and Clitophon. Firstly, examples of ethopoeia in this novel are identified and classified, and then their formal features and their function are studied. This highlights how Achilles Tatius follows the recommendations prescribed by the Progymnasmata handbooks, although in a free way, adapting them to his narrative and stylistic needs.
