Abstract

This lecture purports to explore the parodic elements in the Irus episode (Odyssey XVIII). The general structure of the scene is thrown into relief in order to characterise the comic technique used by the poet. Details pertaining to vocabulary may open lines of enquiry conducive to a late dating for this part of the poem.
