Abstract

Focusing on the cinematographic representations of the tragic and on the intertextuality in the film Medea (1988) by Lars Von Trier, we reflect on the director's search for a metaphorical content of his own as a motif for adapting Euripides’ classical work and the way in which this intent dialogues with the poetic quality underlying Carl Theodor Dreyer's cinema. Intertextual elements that present the myth are sought in the audiovisual narrative, based on the concepts of representation, myth, imaginary and intertextuality and the film analysis proposed by Francis Vanoye (1994).
