Abstract

The aim of this article is to provide a critical appraisal and offer an interpretation of the Rota Vergilii. We therefore review some of its modern commentaries and analyse sections of the text in which the Rota Vergilii is presented, namely John of Garland's Parisiana Poetria. Our conclusion was that the stili of the Rota Vergilii are not sets of subjects and matters, as some modern theorists have claimed, but pertain to the domain of elocution, whereby this medieval concept of "style" is partially in line with the classical theory of the genera dicendi.
