The prologue of Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus can be considered as a masterpiece of audience engagement and stage movement production. The tragediographer's implication of the audience results from his ability to merge fact and myth in this play, without exceeding the limits of the conventions of the Athenian theatre. Moreover, the use of a precise linguistic apparatus reinforces the engagement of the audience and, at the same time, denounces all the stage movements of the actors. Taking that into consideration, this article seeks to analyse the text of the prologue of the play, so as to shed some light on the devices used by the tragediographer to achieve his ends.
