In 1611 a new manual for the teaching of Latin was published in Salamanca, the Ianua linguarum siue modus maxime accommodatus quo patefit aditus ad omnes linguas intelligendas, which was to enjoy great success in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, as demonstrated by the appearance of another 30 editions in different languages and countries.
It based the learning of Latin on the memorisation of short sentences, for which it advocated the use of local memory. Our aim is to study the place occupied by this technique, this ars memoratiua, in several significant 17th century editions of the Ianuae linguarum.
