Abstract

This article describes the transmission of mnemonic knowledge in Catholic Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, whether orally or via a written medium (manuscript or printed). The second part of the article concentrates on Fénix de Minerva by Juan Velázquez de Azevedo (1626) and shows that an important part of it is a translation of Gesualdo's Plutosophy (1592). In conclusion, this article emphasizes the need to consider mnemonic texts in both their local and European contexts in order to understand them and the motivations of their authors.
