Abstract
This paper fully updates the most relevant information critics have so far provided about Calcidius, who was the author of a partial Latin translation and commentary of Plato’s Timaeus. Although it seems he was not a major influence in Late Antiquity, his work was instrumental in raising awareness of the Platonic philosophy in the medieval West, ignorant of Greek language, especially from the twelfth century onwards. We therefore hope to establish his rightful place in the history of Latin literature and in ancient and medieval Platonism.
