Abstract

The P.L.S., the longest and most profoundly elaborate of all treatises in the history of poetics, is more renowned, in view of its huge scope, for a series of famous isolated formulations than for the laboriously built totality, though showing an undeniable and profound personal mark. In this study we intend to approach that totality in its structural coherence, while at the same time highlighting certain lines of interest present in the author and his works, not neglecting his relationship with his time. We have resorted to the most important and updated bibliography to sketch this general overview, and we have presented some of the key aspects pertaining to the research on Scaliger’s Poetics, providing the state of the art or opening up perspectives for further study.
