Abstract

Carthage was not a state that always refused land confrontation. To begin with, the Carthaginians made their intentions very clear in Sicily through serious military actions supported by mercenaries. There was also a
citizen army available in Africa, apparently heavy infantry, in case of real danger for the city. The sources, however, pointed out the Carthaginian cowardice against Greeks of Sicily and Romans (both braves in nature), which can lead us to ignore how Carthaginian land forces changed during these wars. This article casts light on this subject, and tries to present a coherent account of how military thought among Carthaginians evolved in the early Hellenistic period.
